Alcohol Contributed to Ohio Student's Death

OHIO - A Dayton, Ohio newspaper reports a 20-year-old Ohio University women's soccer player who fell from a fifth-floor hotel balcony and died in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, had an elevated alcohol level.

Witnesses told investigators Sarah Merritt from Tipp City, Ohio, was climbing from the balcony of one room to another when she fell about 60 feet March 21.

Beaufort County Sheriff's Captain Bob Bromage says tests show Merritt had alcohol in her system. He would not release her blood-alcohol level. Bromage says it's thought alcohol contributed to her fall.

He says Merritt died of severe head trauma. Her death has been ruled an accident.

Information investigators obtained about who provided alcohol to Merritt will be turned over to prosecutors for possible criminal charges.

Sunday alcohol sales will start earlier in Ohio

Restaurants, bars, carryouts and other vendors licensed to peddle alcohol on Sundays will be able to hawk them two hours earlier thanks to a change in Ohio law that takes effect Sunday, Oct. 18.

Quick Drug Facts

The rate of binge alcohol use was lowest among Asians (11.0 percent). Rates for other racial/ethnic groups were 19.0 percent for blacks, 23.6 percent for whites, 24.2 percent for Hispanics, 29.6 percent for American Indians/Alaska Natives, and 29.8 percent for Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders.
Approximately one fifth (20.5 percent) of persons aged 12 or older participated in binge drinking at least once in the 30 days prior to the survey. Although the number of current drinkers increased between 2000 and 2001, the number of those reporting binge drinking did not change significantly.
Non-alcoholic beers average about 94 percent less alcohol and 58 percent fewer calories than regular beer.
What is tolerance? Tolerance is the adaptation of the body to the effects of alcohol (or another drug). This means that a person must drink more and more alcohol to produce the same effects as the first time they drank. Not everyone becomes tolerant to alcohol, but when it occurs it can be significant. For example, some heavy drinkers consume over a quart of spirits per day.
