Michigan drunken driving arrests drop during summer crackdown

MICHIGAN -- Fewer people were arrested for drunken driving in Michigan and Kent County this year during a late-summer crackdown.

Michigan police arrested 520 drunken drivers statewide, including 16 in Kent County and 20 in Ottawa County, from Aug. 19 through Sept. 6.

Last year's late-summer effort arrested 552 statewide, including 22 in Kent and 16 in Ottawa county. Total traffic stops also fell, to 12,034 this year from about 13,000 last year.

"We've watched fatalities creep down, too," said Lynn Sutfin, spokeswoman for the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, which coordinated the crackdown with 200 police agencies.

During Labor Day weekend, 13 people died in Michigan crashes -- none were in Kent or Ottawa counties -- and only two of them involved alcohol, she said. Last year, 16 people died, with four crashes involving alcohol.

Total vehicle stops fluctuates each year. More money last year allowed officers to log more overtime hours, Sutfin said.

But overall, drunken driving deaths appear to be declining, based on the annual Michigan Drunk Driving Audit, Sutfin said.

In all of 2009, there were 351 alcohol-related traffic deaths, compared to 379 in 2008. In 2009 police made 45,893 alcohol or drug-related driving arrests, 1,358 fewer than the year before.

The number of people injured in crashes involving alcohol or drugs did increase slightly, up to 6,271 from 6,248.

The next statewide crackdown coincides with Halloween, from Oct. 25 to 31.

Quick Drug Facts

Alcohol goes directly to the bloodstream, which is why it effects every system in the body.
Although African-American youth drink less than other youth (according to the 2004 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 19.1% of African Americans between 12 and 20 used alcohol in the 30 days prior to the survey, compared to 32.6% of whites, and 9.9% of African-American youth reported "binge" drinking, compared to 22.8% of whites), there is evidence from public health research that, as they age, African Americans suffer more from alcohol-related diseases than other groups in the population.
High protein foods such as cheese and peanuts help slow the absorption of alcohol into the body.
Alcohol abuse is a pattern of drinking which results in harm to one's health, interpersonal relationships, or ability to work.
