Most consist of some form of education classes, support groups, and or individualized therapy where the alcohol user does not require overnight stay. This is a popular form of treatment because of it's flexibility especially for those who cannot take long periods of time to devote entirely to alcohol abuse treatment. These types of programs can be very useful to those in Dearborn Heights who must continue to work or attend school. Programs for outpatient treatment vary depending on the patient’s needs and the facility but they can consist simply of attending an community 12-step group, to a more structured outpatient program typically meeting a couple of times every week for a couple of hours at a time or, intensive out-patient(IOP) which consists of a highly structured group program that meets 3 to 5 days a week for a few hours at a time.

Quick Drug Facts |
What are the similarities among alcoholic beverages? Of course, beer, wine, and spirits all contain ethyl alcohol (ethanol) as a product of fermentation in the manufacturing process. Beer (and sometimes wine) has natural carbonation, which may alter the absorption rate of ethanol. In general, one beer, one 5-ounce glass of wine, and 1.5 ounces of spirits contain similar amounts of alcohol (thus these are called "beverage units"). The ethanol in all alcoholic beverages is "handled" by the body identically - metabolism, effects on organs, etc. People can become dependent ("addicted to alcohol") on any alcoholic beverage.
In general, more men than women are alcohol dependent or have alcohol problems.
The problem with including both willful alcohol abuse and pathological alcohol dependence under the general term of "alcoholism" is that this diffuses the powerful scientific evidence that alcohol dependence is a medical issue. Medical issues require treatment. This means there must be adequate insurance to cover the newer research-based treatments for alcohol dependence. The scientific evidence that alcohol dependence is a brain issue requires more research to find exact causes and better treatments, including gene-based treatments. Thus, most research today utilizes the term alcohol dependence as synonymous with "alcoholism". Alcohol abuse is not "alcoholism."
Alcohol is abused by some 14 million Americans and contributes to the deaths of 100,000 each year.
