Alcohol Involved in Indiana Drowning
INDIANA — Authorities say a man had been drinking alcohol before he drowned while swimming in a central Indiana river.
Bartholomew County officials said divers pulled the body of 51-year-old David Sexton from the East Fork White River in Columbus, Indiana about four hours after witnesses reported he disappeared. The Republic newspaper reports that tests found he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.177 percent -- more than twice the state's legal limit to drive.
Sheriff's Maj. Todd Noblitt says witnesses told officers that Sexton was about 15 feet from shore and didn't appear under distress when he went under the water and didn't come back up.

Parents who consume alcohol excessively are much more likely to pass this trait onto their child. One of the most well known facts about alcohol is that expectant mothers who consume alcohol may give birth to a child who suffers from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
|
The Anti-Saloon League still exists; it is now (combined with the American Temperance League) known as the American Council on Alcohol Problems and actively attempts to influence public policy.
|
As late as the mid-17th century, the French wine makers did not use corks. Instead, they used oil-soaked rags stuffed into the necks of bottles.
|
Can alcohol kill people? Alcohol is a very dangerous drug, in two important ways. First, people can overdose on alcohol and die either by suffocating on their vomit while drunk or sleeping, or because alcohol can shut down the brain areas that control breathing. Anyone who has a blood alcohol level of 0.35% or above is in danger of overdose (about 14-18 drinks in a rather brief period of time). Second, chronic heavy drinkers can die during withdrawal from (especially) high blood alcohol levels. (Death is usually due to seizures when the body experiences hyperexcitability during declining blood alcohol levels.)
