Alcohol dependence ("alcoholism") is probably several issues, each with a different cause. For example, some scientists talk about Type I and Type II alcoholics. Others have studied the differences between Types A & B alcoholism. It is also possible that brain chemistry differences could be involved in several types of alcoholism, leading to alcohol dependence associated with dopamine abnormalities in the brain's pleasure pathway, or serotonin abnormalities, endorphin abnormalities, etc.
