Is Wisconsin tough enough on alcohol abuse?
Should the next Wisconsin Legislature do more to punish and prevent drunken driving injuries and deaths?
The Legislature's knee-jerk reaction has consistently been to increase penalties to crack down on the drunken driver. But the bigger problem is alcohol, and until people wrap their minds around that, Wisconsin is going to continue to circle around the problem without getting anywhere.
Wisconsin has an entrenched relationship with alcohol. It doesn't matter if it's because of our German or Irish heritage or whatever heritage you want to blame. Simply saying it is the "culture" doesn't help matters. It's an excuse to not do anything, at least not any of the hard stuff needed to actually make some changes and inroads against the havoc that alcohol wreaks on Wisconsin day after day, and not always in the form of driving under the influence.
To get serious, the Legislature has to step away from the "get tough" on drunken drivers mentality, and "get tough" on alcohol. Increasing the beer tax and removing the statutory prohibition on sobriety checkpoints would be a good start.

In the state of Wisconsin we have seen the price of cigarettes go up and up continuously over the past few years. A pack of cigarettes that cost $4.50 three year ago has now reached prices above $7.

What is the market for medications to treat alcoholism? One source says 18 million people. But the NIAAA website states that alcoholism is "alcohol dependence", a more specific definition, which at an estimated incidence of around 4% in the United States is approximately 11 million people who are alcohol dependent. Since the FDA is approving medications primarily for the treatment of alcohol dependent patients, the 18 million estimate is quite high. And the market is only as good as accessibility, which will be low until physicians appreciate that alcohol dependence is a disease that can be treated with prescription medications.
