Virginia Student Dies In Alcohol-Linked Fall

VIRGINA - A University of Virginia student fell down some stairs and died over the weekend, becoming the fifth Virginia college student killed in an alcohol-related accident in a month.

The student, Leslie Anne Baltz, 21, of Reston fell, striking her head on Saturday night, Virginia police officers said. She died on Sunday at a hospital.

Ms. Baltz's death came days after the State Attorney General, Richard Cullen, created a task force to help curb binge-drinking among students.

Ms. Baltz, a senior honors student, was found unconscious at the bottom of the stairs by three friends. There was no sign of foul play, Detective Richard Hudson said.

The woman's blood-alcohol concentration was more than three times the legal Virginia limit for driving, Mr. Hudson said.

Quick Drug Facts

What are "Jello shooters"? These are unpredictable alcohol concoctions. One common recipe is to mix a cup of water with a cup of your favorite spirit (usually vodka, and please don't use 190-proof Everclear) along with a package of Jello. Freeze until firm. (And hope your party guests find them before your kids do.......) A typical shooter will contain the equivalent of 1-2 shots of "your favorite spirit" (depending on the size of the portion) and will produce intoxication in a short period of time. Be careful- because there is no standard recipe, these can be dangerous!
One thousand people die from alcohol overdoses each year. Many of them are young people who drank fast to show off for their friends.
More than one-half of American adults have a close family member who has or has had alcoholism.
The Century Council's November survey data were collected by telephone interviews of 1001 adults, 18 years or older, in the contiguous United States. Another sample polled 364 adults living in eight states. 72% didn't know the blood alcohol limit in their state
