Vermont: Underage drinking party broken up

VERMONT -- Local Bennington, Vermont police say they busted an underage drinking party Saturday night and issued 37 citations for consumption of alcohol.

Bennington, Vermont Police Cpl. Thalia Hudson said officers responded to a noise complaint on River Road around 11 p.m. and discovered the party of about 100 people. The party was comprised mostly of college students, according to Hudson.

She said Gregary Gilmore, 20, of North Bennington, and Nicholas Haggerty, 20, also of North Bennington, hosted the party. Both were cited for enabling the consumption of alcohol by minors. They will appear in Bennington, Vermont Criminal Court on Oct. 22.

Hudson said the Vermont State Police and the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department assisted with issuing the citations.

Quick Drug Facts

We have all been there. You're at a bar, a party, or even a friend's house when someone has had one too many and doesn't think twice about hitting the road. Drunk drivers are a risk to themselves, others, and even you. Do not just watch next time.
Can alcohol cause diabetes? We first have to recall that there are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 is a more severe type that appears to be an autoimmune disease where the body tries to reject the pancreas. Therefore the ability of the pancreas to produce insulin is greatly reduced or absent. Type 2 has more to do with obesity, inadequate exercise, or excessive sugar intake. There is some indication that heavy drinking can elevate fasting blood glucose levels, but whether alcohol causes this type 2 diabetes is still open to question. It is not likely that alcohol causes Type 1 diabetes.
When a pregnant woman drinks, alcohol passes quickly through the placenta to her unborn baby. Because the unborn baby's body is immature and underdeveloped, the baby's body breaks down alcohol significantly more slowly than in an adult's body. Consequently, the alcohol level in the baby's blood can be significantly higher and remain elevated significantly longer than the alcohol level in the mother's blood. This unhealthy situation can lead to lifelong damage to the baby.
African-American youth culture already abounds with alcohol products and imagery. A content analysis of 1,000 of the most popular songs from 1996 to 1997 found that references to alcohol were more frequent in rap (47% of songs had alcohol references) than other genres such as country-western (13%), top 40 (12%), alternative rock (10%), and heavy metal (4%); and that 48% of these rap songs had product placements or mentions of specific alcohol brand names.
