South Dakota Communities Receive $1.4 million for Alcohol Prevention

SOUTH DAKOTA – Gov. Mike Rounds announced today that $1.4 million has been awarded to 26 community coalitions across South Dakota for alcohol prevention services.
“I’m encouraged by the many South Dakota communities that requested funds to address underage drinking and binge drinking,” Gov. Rounds said. “This is a clear indication of the strong grassroots prevention efforts that are going on in our state.”

The South Dakota Department of Human Services received the alcohol prevention funds from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The federal grant will enhance South Dakota efforts to build community partnerships that focus on alcohol prevention initiatives for youth and young adults.

Coalitions will use the funds to assess local substance abuse issues and develop tailored prevention plans. Coalitions implementing effective alcohol prevention strategies may be eligible for additional funding for up to four years.

The grant program supports an extensive collaboration to strengthen the state/local prevention system.

Know the risks. Alcohol is a drug. Mixing it with any other drug can be extremely dangerous. Alcohol and acetaminophen--a common ingredient in OTC pain and fever reducers--can damage your liver. Alcohol mixed with other drugs can cause nausea, vomiting, fainting, heart problems, and difficulty breathing. Mixing alcohol and drugs also can lead to coma and death.
Gin is spirit alcohol flavored from juniper berries. First made by the Dutch, it was called junever, the Dutch word for "juniper." The French called it genievre, which the English changed to "geneva" and then modified to gin.
During the colonial times, alcohol consumption was quite common with men and women. It was a custom to pause for drinks several times a day.
