South Carolina sees drop in fatal alcohol-related crashes

SOUTH CAROLINA - The number of alcohol-related vehicle fatalities reported in South Carolina is slowly decreasing, according to newly released statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

A yearly accumulation of South Carolina fatality statistics has led transportation officials to identify 377 victims involved in alcohol-related fatal accidents in 2009, compared to 400 victims reported in 2008. The overall decrease led to what officials call a "major" 5.8 percent decrease in reported deaths.

Despite the drop in deaths, South Carolina continues fare high among states with the greatest percent of traffic fatalities involving alcohol. South Carolina tops the annual list at No. 3, dropping from the No. 2 position in 2008.

"I'm pleased with the direction we're heading, but too many people are still getting killed on our roadways," Mark Keel, director of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety said. "My hope is that the steps we're taking this year with enforcement and public education will continue to reduce the number of traffic fatalities in this state."

In addition to the number of DUI-related traffic deaths, officials in the Palmetto State also report overall traffic fatalities have dropped from the previous year. South Carolina experienced a 2.9 percent reduction, from 921 deaths in 2008 to 894 in 2009.

"South Carolina is also on track to end 2010 with fewer traffic fatalities than 2009," SCDPS spokesman Sid Gaulden added.

Preliminary numbers compiled by the department reveal 550 people have died on South Carolina roadways as of Sept. 14. During the same time period in 2009, officials reported 639 deaths.

A temperance publication wrote of drinking parents who gave birth to small children with a "yen for alcohol so strong that the mere sight of a bottle shaped like a whiskey flask brought them whining for a nip."
In the 1940's, California law made it illegal to serve alcohol to a gay (homosexual) person.

African-American youth culture already abounds with alcohol products and imagery. A content analysis of 1,000 of the most popular songs from 1996 to 1997 found that references to alcohol were more frequent in rap (47% of songs had alcohol references) than other genres such as country-western (13%), top 40 (12%), alternative rock (10%), and heavy metal (4%); and that 48% of these rap songs had product placements or mentions of specific alcohol brand names.
