Rhode Island receives 'C' for efforts to reduce alcohol drunk-driving episodes
RHODE ISLAND - MADD gives R.I. 'C' for efforts to reduce drunk-driving episodes. Alcohol-related traffic deaths last year were 54 percent of traffic deaths, down from nearly 66 percent of deaths in 1982, but still below the nation's 1992 average of 45.4 percent.
In Rhode Island last year, 54 percent of the 79 traffic deaths involved alcohol, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That's down from nearly 66 percent of deaths in 1982, but still below the nation's 1992 average of 45.4 percent.
MADD unveiled the national report card at a news conference here yesterday. The nation as a whole received a B-minus in dealing with drunk driving, although MADD noted that the number of traffic deaths involving alcohol has declined by nearly a third in the past decade.

Alcohol Treatment Centers by City in Rhode Island Listed Alphabetically: | | Quick Drug Facts |
Almost every culture has developed a way to make consumable alcohol from anything they have handy. We make it from grain and grapes, the Japanese from rice, and the Mongolians from fermented mare's milk.
|
A 12-ounce can of beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine and a 1.5-ounce shot of straight 80 proof liquor all contain the same amount of alcohol, so their effect on the body is the same.
|
People who use both alcohol and drugs also are at risk for dangerous interactions between these substances. For example, a person who uses alcohol with depressants, whether these drugs are prescribed or taken illegally, is at increased risk of fatal poisoning.
|
Before thermometers were invented, brewers would dip a thumb or finger into the liquid to determine the ideal temperature, neither too hot nor too cold, for adding yeast. From this we get the phrase "rule of thumb."
