Alcohol a potential factor in fatal Nevada car wreck

NEVADA - The couple killed in a car crash Tuesday night on Lake Mead near Hollywood has been identified. According to Nevada Highway Patrol, 26 year-old Natalio Galindo, of North Las Vegas, was driving his Saturn westbound on Lake Mead Blvd, when he crossed the double yellow line, colliding with a Chevy Blazer.

Galindo's fiancee, 19 year-old Annica Franco, who was riding in the front passenger seat, also died at the scene. Galindo's 3 year old son and Franco's infant daughter were uninjured due to properly installed safety seats. Nevada Nighway Patrol says alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash. It's believe Galindo may have been drinking alcohol prior to the intense wreck.

"There were witnesses in the area that said the Saturn tried to pass with multiple vehicles in front of him in a curve; it was dark and he went head on," said Sgt. Alan Davidson with Nevada Highway Patrol.

The deadly accident was a scene all too familiar on that stretch of Nevada highway. The field of crosses lined up along the winding road that takes you to Lake Mead mark some the fatal wrecks here; and serve as a somber reminder to drivers like Dean Stafford who lost a friend off one of these cliffs.

"When he was coming up over the hill he hit the corner if you make just one mistake you wont make it," said Stafford.

Yet officials say the road is not to blame, but rather the drivers and their actions, since most of these accidents can be prevented.

"If you pass in a no pass zone, drink and drive, or travel above the speed limit, bad things will happen,' said Sgt. Davidson.

The driver of the Chevy Blazer was taken to UMC and is expected to make a full recovery. Nevada Highway Patrol says this is the 25th fatal crash this year in southern Nevada highways. With the summer months ahead, they know that number will increase as more drivers hit the roads and may engage in reckless behavior.

Quick Drug Facts

Parents and peers have a large impact on youth decisions to drink. However, research clearly indicates that alcohol advertising and marketing also have a significant effect by influencing youth and adult expectations and attitudes, and helping to create an environment that promotes underage drinking.
There is some evidence that women cannot drink the same amount as men even if they were equal in size because they metabolize alcohol less efficiently.
Alcohol is considered a medication according to a United States pharmacological directory
The younger you are when you start drinking, the more likely you are to have a problem with alcohol.
