Alcohol-related fatal crashes down in Minnesota in 2009
MINNESOTA - Alcohol-related crashes in Minnesota last year resulted in 141 deaths, which was a record low, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety said Thursday.
There had been 163 deaths in 2008 and 197 in 2007. The 2009 alcohol-related crash deaths represented 34 percent of the 421 Minnesota traffic deaths, the department said as it released its annual summary of impaired driving.
"While Minnesota has made progress to reduce alcohol-related deaths through enhanced enforcement and education efforts, it is very discouraging that we continue to battle a behavior that everyone knows is dangerous, deadly and comes with serious consequences," said Cheri Marti, director of DPS' Office of Traffic Safety.
Why the drop in alcohol-related crash deaths in Minnesota? DPS points to legislation, such as lowering the legal limit for driving to 0.08 blood-alcohol level and the primary seatbelt law, and enforcement programs and educational outreach campaigns.

Which is more "addictive"--alcohol or marijuana? According to available figures, about 10-12% of people who drink will become dependent on alcohol. The same source indicates that about 9% of people who smoke marijuana on a regular basis will become dependent on the drug. Both of these drugs are less "addicting" than others such as cocaine (~17%), heroin (~23%), and nicotine (~32%). But "addiction" is not the only factor in the use of these drugs--intoxication outcomes, lethality, and social consequences are also important.
