Massachusetts Freshman in Coma After Fraternity Alcohol Party
MASSACHUSETTS — A freshman pledge at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was hospitalized on Saturday morning after attending a fraternity party and was in an alcohol-induced coma today, officials said.
The student, Scott Krueger, 18, of Orchard Park, N.Y., was found to have had a blood-alcohol level of .410 percent, or five times the legal limit for drivers in the state, said his mother, Darlene.
''They told me it was a party where little brothers were paired off with big brothers,'' Mrs. Krueger said. ''The freshmen had to drink a certain amount of alcohol collectively.''
Vomit and empty liquor bottles were found in Mr. Krueger's room at the fraternity house, the Boston police said. The Phi Gamma Delta chapter has been suspended, pending an investigation. Fraternity officers declined to comment today.
Students will be allowed to continue to live at the Massachusetts fraternity but will be barred from conducting any scheduled social activities, said Bob Sales, a university spokesman.
